I mean the other one.

Y'know...

The crazy dude who made that Antivirus you're probably running?

The crazy dude who ran for president?

The one who didn't kill himself in jail?

Yeah...

THAT John Mcafee.

Well get this, before he was a madman in Belize stimulating the local economy by paying the hookers to shit in his mouth (not making this up disclaimer)... he was a software salesman. In fact, he's known for creating one of the very first antivirus solutions on the market.

The problem, however was that the actual market for computers was still so young and new, that nobody actually had an idea how serious a computer virus actually was.

John couldn't sell his software because people (and businesses) genuinely had no idea why they'd need it.

The solution?

John, started appearing on the news and in interviews talking about computer viruses and how they had the potential to ruin your expensive hardware.

He would talk about specific viruses, and new ones that would pop up and he would dial the fear mongering up to eleven as long as it got the word out.

He wanted the people scared.

He wanted them paranoid.

He wanted them buying his antivirus software.

I mean seriously, how else was he going to fund his coccaine habit?

Funny thing though, is how this story demonstrates a powerful "meta" level principle in copy a lot of coaches aren't aware of:

The simple fact that you can't sell sell something to someone who doesn't even know they have a problem.

This is why, in many cases one of the easiest things you can do to convert subscribers into booked calls and sales is to "put the fear of the problem" in them through your emails.

I'm not saying invent a problem...

I'm saying open their eyes to the problem, then propose a solution.

And you can do all this in your emails, over time to gradually build the awareness.

As with everything, it's a long play.

But a very rewarding one as you unlock new, untapped segments of your market.
